RIP Gourmet Magazine 1941-2009: The Final Issue of Gourmet Magazine Hits Stands

Sad news! The November issue of Gourmet Magazine will be the last issue printed. Sniff sniff. When I discovered this was true I was shocked & disappointed! Gourmet has been a epicurean staple since WWII-1941, and a favorite mag of mine for years!!

Conde Nast recently decided to can the magazine since ad sales were down, and Bon Appetit's (a newer publication of Conde Nast) sales were slightly higher. This is surprising because I have always felt that Bon Appetit pales in comparison in so many ways to Gourmet, not only in articles but in recipes and layout in general. Now Conde Nast is now trying to fill the rest of my subscriptions with issues of Bon Appetit! I will definitely be getting my money back on this one so I can get a real epicurean mag like Saveur.

Ruth Reichl, editor of Gourmet Magazine was recently interviewed on NPR discussing the surprise cancellation of the magazine. Please listen here for the interview. Her latest memoir is entitled, 'Not Becoming My Mother: and Other Things she Taught me Along the Way.'

  1. I totally agree! I love Gourmet, but was never too keen on Bon Appetit. I will miss Ruth and the whole crew.

  2. I know me too! I am quite disappointed about the news. Not a fan of Bon Appetit!! Always sad to see those old classics go away.

Actually was thinking of getting a subscription to Saveur....Do you know of any other good Epicurean/Foodie Magazines you can recommend?

  3. I love Saveur personally, but I also have a subscription to Vegetarian Times and I really like that magazine as well for creative vegetarian recipes. Food & Wine is good, and some people I know are a fan of Cooking Light.

I'd recommend going to a 'big' bookstore near you and checking out their magazine selection, I know that the Tattered Cover in Denver has a great assortment of Foodie mags I have never even heard of, but are pretty awesome.

  4. I think it is interesting to hear that 'magazines' in general are on their way out. How can you compare receiving a shiny new copy of your fav magazine in the mail each month, with an email blast or a website? To me they are just not conducive enough.

I feel the same way with books! Some traditions should be cherished.
